Dissipative quantum–oscillator with two competing heat baths

چکیده
We study the dissipative dynamics of a harmonic oscillator which couples linearly through its position and its momentum to two independent heat baths at the same temperature. We argue that this model describes a large spin in a ferromagnet. We find that some effects of the two heat baths partially cancel each other. This leads to unexpected features such as underdamped oscillations in the strong coupling regime. Such a partial frustration of dissipation can be ascribed to the canonically conjugate character of position and momentum. We compare this model to the scenario where a single heat bath couples linearly to both the position and the momentum of the central oscillator. In that case no surprising behavior occurs for strong coupling. The dynamical evolution of the quantum purity for a single and a double wave packet is also investigated. Dissipation-induced enhancement of quantum fluctuations
We study a quantumharmonic oscillator linearly coupled through the position operator q̂ to a first bath and through themomentumoperator p̂ to a second bath yielding anOhmic–Drude dissipation. We analyse the oscillator’sfluctuations as a function of the ratio between the strength of the two couplings, focusing in particular on the situation inwhich the two dissipative interactions are comparable. ...
متن کاملQuantum magnetic impurities in magnetically ordered systems.
We discuss the problem of a spin 1/2 impurity immersed in a spin S magnetically ordered background. We show that the problem maps onto a generalization of the dissipative two level system with two independent heat baths, associated with the Goldstone modes of the magnet, that couple to different components of the impurity spin operator. Using analytical perturbative renormalization group method...
متن کاملDissipative quantum dynamics with the surrogate Hamiltonian approach. A comparison between spin and harmonic baths.
The dissipative quantum dynamics of an anharmonic oscillator coupled to a bath is studied with the purpose of elucidating the differences between the relaxation to a spin bath and to a harmonic bath. Converged results are obtained for the spin bath by the surrogate Hamiltonian approach. This method is based on constructing a system-bath Hamiltonian, with a finite but large number of spin bath m...
متن کاملGreen's function and position correlation function for a charged oscillator in a heat bath and a magnetic field
We formulate, in the framework of the generalized quantum Langevin equation approach, the retarded Green's functions and the symmetrized position correlation functions for the motion of a charged quantum-mechanical particle in a spatial harmonic potential, coupled linearly to a passive heat bath, and subject to a constant homogeneous magnetic field. General conclusions can then be reached by us...
متن کاملQuasiclassical Approach to Two - level Systems With Dissipation
The quantum dynamics of two-level systems under classical oscillator heat bath is mapped to the classical one of a charged particle under harmonic oscillator potential plus a magnetic field in a plane. The behavior of eigenstates and tunneling and localization are studied in detail. The broken symmetry condition and Langevin-like dissipative equation of motion are obtained. Some special dynamic...
